Shopify vs WordPress for Solo Creators Selling Digital Products

The real decision is whether you need a store yet—and what operating it will cost after the subscription.

Comparison guide · Official provider information checked 2026-09-23 · No affiliate links · Not a hands-on review

No proven buyers yet? You may need neither platform. Test a simple digital offer with a no-monthly-fee selling option first. Build an owned storefront when its control or workflow earns the fixed cost.

For a creator ready to run a branded store, Shopify packages checkout, hosting, SSL, and store administration. Self-hosted WordPress plus WooCommerce gives deeper control, but you assemble and maintain hosting, payments, extensions, backups, and security. Neither choice removes payment fees, marketing work, customer support, or digital-tax obligations.

This guide covers ebooks, templates, design assets, audio files, and similar downloads. Courses, memberships, and software licenses may need additional tools.

What you actually get

Shopify Basic includes an online store and blog. Shopify’s free Digital Products app can deliver a file or access link after purchase. Configure and test the app; the base storefront alone is not a completed download workflow.

WordPress.org is open-source website software, not hosting or a payment processor. WooCommerce core adds a store without a platform subscription. Its download settings cover delivery and access, but hosting and operations remain your responsibility. Do not place paid downloads in the ordinary WordPress media library: WooCommerce warns direct media URLs can be publicly accessible.

The three-year cost, without a fake winner

On the US Shopify pricing page checked 2026-09-23, Basic is $39/month paid monthly or $29/month billed yearly. At unchanged rates, 36 months of plan fees alone would be:

$1,40436 × $39, monthly-paid Basic. Excludes every other cost.
$1,04436 × $29, yearly-billed Basic. Assumes the displayed rate stays unchanged.

WooCommerce lists its core at $0/month and gives $25–$350/month as a hosting range for most stores. At the illustrative low end, $25 × 36 = $900 for hosting alone. That is not a store quote or an apples-to-apples total. Domain, payment processing, extensions, backups, and maintenance time are additional.

Compare the same country, order volume, and workflow.Shopify total = plan + payments/transaction fees + domain + apps + tax tooling + operating time.
WordPress total = hosting + domain + payments + extensions + backup/security + setup and maintenance time.

Introductory discounts are excluded. Fees, local prices, tax tooling, and payment-method availability vary. Do not claim a universal break-even point without your actual inputs.

Tax and delivery are not footnotes

Cross-border digital sales can create location-specific tax obligations. Shopify’s digital-product tax guide explains EU consumer VAT by buyer location and advises checking obligations with a local tax expert. Platform settings do not remove the seller’s responsibilities.

Before launch, run a small test order and verify payment, email, access link, download limits, refunds, and mobile checkout. On WooCommerce, check protected file storage and the order status granting access. On Shopify, check that the Digital Products app and delivery settings match the offer.

A practical choice

  • Choose Shopify when a managed store is worth its monthly fee and avoiding WordPress commerce maintenance is valuable.
  • Choose WordPress + WooCommerce when you need a content-heavy owned site, can manage its technical responsibilities, and require deeper control.
  • Choose neither yet when the next useful evidence is whether one specific product will sell.

The cheapest platform is not the cheapest business if it delays the test that matters. For the earlier-stage decision, read The Lean Creator Business Stack.
